SESQUIPEDALIANYou can be accused of being sesquipedalian if you like to use really big words.
This word can also be used to describe articles, books, speeches, etc. If it uses big words, it can be accused of being sesquipedalian.
The Roman writer Horace said “Proicit ampullas et sesquipedalia verba” This translates to: “He throws aside his pots of paint and his words that are a foot and a half long."
So the real meaning of this word as it was originally used was actually "a foot and a half." That's pretty big, even for Latin words.
Here is something really cool to do.
After a really tough hour of dense technical material, stop at the teacher's desk on your way out. Give her a sweet smile, and thank her for the sesquipedalian drills.
It will drive her crazy. |
