Quirky Facts

Cannot vs. Can not

It is a common error to use the two-word version when the rules of English state that the one-word version must be used.

Or is it?

Most dictionaries will give only one definition of the word "Cannot."  That definition is "can not."

The usage of "cannot" as one word is a choice of style.  It is a common style.  It is a style used by most people.  But in the end, it is only a style of writing.  It is not an English rule.

But hey, there isn't much sense arguing the point.  Most schools insist on the one-word style.  They like it that way.  That's their style.
