The Five-Percent Solution

Stephen Shastay

Court reporting students know that steno is a skill, but very few work on the "little things."  All of the items on the following list are very basic.  You learned them in theory class, but you haven't mastered them yet.  You should be working on all of them every day.

If you have a weak area, you may be losing five
percent, ten percent, or more of your speed.  If you have a lot
of weak areas, you could be a full speed level or more below your
true speed.

Don't worry.  No hard work is required.

  1. Read your notes.

  2. Analyze your test after the teacher has returned it to you.

  3. Review your theory book.

  4. Sit correctly.

  5. Type a test every day.

  6. Hold your hands properly.

  7. Keep your fingers curled and in the Home position.

  8. Cut your nails.  Cut your nails.  Cut your nails.

  9. Don't rest your arms on your thighs.

  10. Carry a dictionary to the typing room.

  11. Drop correctly.

  12. Review your punctuation rules.

  13. Get your sleep.

  14. Eat right.

  15. Believe in yourself.
