Three Easy Steno Drills

by

Stephen John Shastay

The first drill covers numbers. It is a hard drill to do correctly.  Concentrate on the mechanics of the drill.  Learn the proper pattern for stroking numbers accurately on your steno machine.

1) Rest your fingers on the home keys.
2) Reach out and stroke the number.
3) Return to the home keys.

Make sure that you return fully to the home keys.  If you do this drill correctly, you will  begin to see a difference in your steno within a few minutes.  You will be faster and more accurate than ever.

The second drill mixes numbers and letters. Some of these patterns are very unusual in court reporting. Once you understand how this drill is set up, you will enjoy it. This is an excellent drill for those who
had trouble doing the first drill correctly. This will force you to return to the home keys.

The third drill has some of the easiest strokes in stenography. You should be able to do this drill at high speed with little problem. If one section slows you down, concentrate on that section.

There aren’t many steno speed drills that I recommend. This one is a gold-plated, jewel-encrusted, kick-butt, number-one-with-a-bullet, speed builder.

But you shouldn’t go any faster than your speed on the slowest or toughest section.

Why? Because it is the slow section that is keeping you from moving to a higher speed. Every time you hit a portion of a test with the strokes that you have neglected to master, you have to slow down or you have to drop.

These are the easy strokes
for most people.  The real question is: Of these easy strokes, which ones do you find need
to practice?
